Marks & Spencer
Whatever type of bedding you're looking for, you're almost guaranteed to find it at Marks & Spencer. From budget-friendly feather-and-down duvets and pillows to easy-to-care-for fitted sheets and pillowcases, M&S nails affordability, practicality, and quality.
A bestseller for good reason, Marks & Spencer's Egyptian cotton bed linen is soft, breathable, durable, and available in a wide range of colours.
This synthetic M&S duvet range is affordable and machine washable, so easy to care for.
M&S is one of the best places to shop affordable feather and down bedding.
The brand has recently launched a series of great bedding collaborations.
John Lewis
However, M&S does have competition. Whereas John Lewis used to be the more expensive option for bedding, its pricing is now far more competitive and depending on what you're shopping for, the brand often beats M&S for value for money. Plus, as well as affordable own-brand lines, John Lewis also stocks a brilliant range of other high-quality bedding brands.
John Lewis is one of the few stockists of luxury British bedding brands such as Piglet in Bed.
Want a little more luxury? John Lewis ups the ante with 400 thread count Egyptian bedding.
Whilst the brand is also great for quality bedding essentials.
One of the best wool duvets you can buy, you can buy Floks bedding at John Lewis too.
The White Company
There's no denying that The White Company’s bedding is an investment, but if you're looking to splurge on a luxury Hungarian goose down duvet or want some hotel-worthy bed linen, the White Company has both. Plus, although sales are rare, if you keep an eye on our White Company deals page you might be able to snap up a bargain.
One of the brands bestsellers is the Savoy; crisp white 400 thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen.
If you're looking to invest in high quality Hungarian goose down bedding, this is the place to shop.
Not everything at The White Company is *all* white.
Similarly, the brand's Hungarian goose down pillows feel super luxurious.
Christy
Christy has been making bed linen (as well as some of the best bath towels on the market) for nearly 200 years, and I've always found the brand's quality to be reliably consistent. There are flat sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases available in a whole host of shades.
This cotton sateen bed linen has a smooth and silky finish, just like its name suggests.
This organic cotton bedding has a lovely relaxed feel.
Christy is another affordable option for duck feather and down bedding.
Dunelm
If you’re looking for budget bedroom ideas, say hello to your new best friend. Dunelm has become a firm favourite of the Ideal Home team, with a wide range of affordable bedding that won't break the bank, whether you're looking for bedding basics or a new duvet cover.
The brand's snuggly Teddy Bear bedding collection is a particular winner with rave reviews from customers each winter season, and I can confirm they are super soft.
These are the most affordable pure cotton sheets I've come across. They're also available in over 40 colour options.
Similarly, Dunelm's 100% cotton 180 thread count duvet set is super affordable.
Or, opt for this budget-friendly brushed cotton option for a cosier feel.
Soak & Sleep
Online-only retailer Soak & Sleep offers a huge range of bedding, and everything I've tested from the brand has been great quality at a reasonable price point. Whether you're after bedding with feather-and-down, wool, cotton, or synthetic fillings, Soak & Sleep has a great choice, and its bed linen is made from quality fabrics that wash well.
Soak & Sleep's French Linen bedding is some of the best I've tested, and although it certainly isn't cheap, it is great value compared to most other options on the market.
Soak & Sleep is another great place to buy top quality Hungarian goose feather and down bedding.
If you really have the budget to splash out, this Mulberry silk bedding is incredible quality.
However, it's not all luxury. The brand also has a brilliant range of great quality affordable basics.
DUSK
If you want bed linen that looks super expensive but only costs a fraction of the price, DUSK is where you need to shop. The brand's collections will not only make your bedroom look expensive on a budget, but regular sales mean you'll rarely need to pay full price.
If you're looking for hotel-quality bed linen the Cambridge 200 Thread Count Duvet Cover won't disappoint. Finished with a piped edge that comes in black, white, or grey it looks super smart on the bed.
This great value waffle bedding doesn't need ironing, which means it's a thumbs up from me.
It's a great place for classic hotel-style bed linen, but there are also plenty of fun touches, like this pom-pom edging.
Piglet in Bed
If you love the relaxed look of linen bed linen then you'll want Piglet in Bed on your radar. Originally one of the best stockists of linen sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases in on-trend ginghams and stripes, the brand has recently extended its range to include pure cotton bed linen and relatively affordable wool-filled duvets and pillows.
The brand is probably best known for its super stylish gingham bedding in a wide range of colourways.
But there are also plenty of stripes to mix and match.
Plus, some good value wool bedding that offers great temperature regulation.
And plain duvet covers, pillow cases, and flat and fitted bed sheets.
FAQs
What is considered the best bedding?
Like many things in life, the best bedding is subjective. ‘You may like the feel of silky-soft sateen weave cotton bedding or prefer the crisp and cool effect of percale weave cotton sheets', explain Emily and Jonathan Attwood, founders of luxury bedding brand Scooms.
Or perhaps 'the relaxed look and feel of 100% linen that you don’t have to iron may appeal, or luxurious long-fibre Egyptian cotton might be the only bed linen for you’, they continue.
However, whichever material you opt for, they agree that the best bedding is breathable, temperature-regulating, lightweight, and durable.

What is the best thread count for bedding?
We can’t talk about bedding without mentioning the best thread count for sheets, as this is often used as a barometer of how good bed linen is.
'Thread count refers to the number of threads woven together per square inch of material' explain Emily and Jonathan of Scooms. 'The more threads woven together means a higher thread count. Great sheets are determined by the quality of the fabric, the weave, and the finish. A high thread count can be a good indicator of good quality bedding, although it won’t make up for poor quality ingredients and an inferior finishing process.'
It's also worth noting that the best thread count for summer can be different from that for winter. That's because most of us want lighter-weight, more breathable fabric in summer.
How much should good bedding cost?
They say that if you buy cheap, you have to buy twice, and that is often the case when it comes to your bedding. Although it might not be viable for all of us, paying more for high-quality bedding will often work in your favour in the long run. Quality bedding won't just feel nicer and perform better, but it should also be more durable and last longer.
