Where things stand currently with Patriots DT Christian Barmore extension talks

The New England Patriots have had contract extension talks with defensive tackle Christian Barmore, per Patriots coach Jerod Mayo.

Barmore has been a key piece of the team’s defensive line during his time with the organization. He has recorded 133 tackles and 12.5 sacks over a span of three seasons. He tallied 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 2023, which were all career-highs.

The Alabama product has helped add stability to the defensive tackle position in a unit that has become one of the best in football overall.

If an extension were to happen, Barmore would only be the second Patriots player drafted in the first three rounds to get a second contract with the organization since the 2013 season. Former Patriots safety Duron Harmon was the other.

“One thing with Barmore — he’s one of those players that’s developed here,” Mayo said at the NFL annual meeting, as transcribed by NESN’s Adam London. “There were some questions coming out of college, obviously, his potential. He’s done a fantastic job growing up. I think DeMarcus (Covington) and Joe Kim have done a great job really helping develop him. Once again, it goes back to — we want to keep our own. We want to keep our own players. We have had talks with Barmore and, hopefully, it works out.”

It is encouraging that talks are being had, as Barmore is a cornerstone of the defensive line unit. New England has done a solid job this off-season keeping key players in the organization.

Keeping Barmore would be another notch in their belt.
