Where the Redskins stand heading into Round 2 of the NFL Draft

The Washington Redskins will get a later-than-expected start to the second day of the 2019 NFL draft.

By design.

The Redskins landed Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins at No. 15 and then moved back up to No. 26 for Mississippi State defender Montez Sweat, sacrificing a second-round pick on the process.

But the Redskins are always candidates to make further moves. Heading into tonight’s event, here is where things stand.

The Opener: Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State (15), Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State (26)

The Redskins got a big win by guessing correctly that nobody in front of them would take Haskins. He’s a potential franchise player at the most important position of all and didn’t cost extra assets. Sweat did, but it’s hard to complain about an elite edge prospect near the end of the first round.

Day 2 Picks

Round 3, No. 76

Round 3, No. 96

Beyond

Round 5, No. 153

Round 5, No. 173

Round 6, No. 206

Round 7, No. 227

Round 7, No. 253

The Needs

Addressing quarterback was the biggest need in Washington, though bolstering the pass rush after losing Preston Smith wasn’t too far behind.

Now the Redskins are free to turn attention to other problem areas such as the interior offensive line. Sticking on that side of the ball, adding more weapons at wideout to help guarantee Haskins’ success is critical.

On the defensive side of the ball, interior linebacker needs some help, as does safety. And thinking about the long game, it wouldn’t hurt to have additional talent at cornerback.

With plenty of picks left the Redskins look like they are in a good position to tackle need at great value on Day 2 and beyond.
