Charts show where snow is predicted to fall in Wales on Thursday but forecasters say it remains uncertain

Wales could see up to 2cm of snow falling per hour later this week in some parts of the country as the temperature drops but the outlook remains uncertain.

The latest weather graphs by WXcharts show that higher ground in the north of the country could see the heaviest snowfall, although according to the charts a large part of the country could see a dusting.

The graph does however show that heavy rainfall is expected on either side of the snow forecasts, and with temperatures set to be above freezing, it is not certain how much will settle and varying models used by forecasters show different outlooks.

There has yet to be a blanketing of snow across Wales this winter despite the ever-fluctuating weather patterns.

The Met Office has also said there could be a possibility of snow on Thursday, however, the forecaster says it remains uncertain with the potential for hail, sleet, snow and thunder all mixed together.

There could be 2cm of snow overnight on Wednesday night into Thursday. Weather chart for 12am on Thursday. (WXcharts)
The north of the country looks likely to see snow in the early hours of Thursday, while it remains wet in the south. Wxchart at 3:00am. (Wxchart)
By 9:00am, nearly all of Wales could expect around 0.6mm of snow according to WXcharts (WXcharts)

Currently, rain is forecast at various locations across Wales throughout the day which could disrupt the snow. For example, in Cardiff there is 80 per cent chance of precipitation in the morning, while up north in Bangor there is also a 30 per cent chance of rain.

Speaking to WalesOnline on Sunday, a Met Office meteorologist said: "It still looks unsettled this stage, but there's so much going on in the short term as another deep low pressure system comes in potentially Thursday which we need to keep an eye on as well. It will be a bit colder at the end of the week as well. Could be a bit of snow of snow around, especially on the hills in Wales."

Wales is already seeing snow in higher areas but this could be more widespread on Thursday.

As the evenings draws in, the possibility of snow has fairly left south Wales according to the charts, with mid and north wales most likely to see some of the white stuff. Once again the highest chances are in Snowdonia. (Wxcharts)
By 9pm, even up north where snow is most likely, this is also now met with rain - meaning it is unlikely to settle. (Wxcharts)

"At present we're seeing now above 300-400 meters. However it could potentially be seen at a lower level later in the week," said the Met Office expert.

"On Thursday there is a greater potential for wintry showers which could give some snow falling to lower levels. It will probably settle on the mountains but also be falling to lower levels. There could be hail, sleet, snow with thunder mixed in with them as well. This could be across all of Wales as the cold air does pushes right across the country into Thursday."
