Where's Wheely? Spot the 460ft Whey Aye Wheel from these locations across the North East

The true scale of ambitious plans to build Europe's biggest wheel on the Newcastle Quayside has been revealed, with new images showing how it could look from locations across the North East.

The World Wheel Company is hoping to build the 460ft 'Whey Aye' observation wheel on the site of the former Spillers Flour Mill.

And the impact of the massive £100m development has now been unveiled in new pictures that show how it would dominate the region's skyline.

Of course, the wheel would dramatically alter views from nearby locations such as the Castle Keep in Newcastle, Byker Bridge, and Gateshead Stadium.

But it would also be visible from as far away as Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend , the Collingwood Monument in Tynemouth, and even Penshaw Monument.

Other locations featured in the collection of concept images include the Glasshouse Bridge in Ouseburn, Newcastle's Town Moor, and Central Station.

World Wheel Company Newcastle chief executive officer, Phil Lynagh, said: "The Whey Aye and Giants on the Quayside development will provide a striking new landmark for Newcastle and be a superb addition to the city's iconic riverside panorama.

"Newcastle Quayside is the perfect location for us to help deliver one of Europe's best waterfront experiences.

"Our new images of The Whey Aye from vantage points around the city let everyone see how spectacular it will look when in place.

"As Europe's tallest observation wheel, The Whey Aye will represent a bold statement of Newcastle's continued ambition to build upon its global reputation as an outstanding place to live, work and visit."

The new images have been sent by the developer to Newcastle City Council alongside a package of redesigns that they hope will help secure planning permission for 'Giants on the Quayside' project, which is expected to create 800 jobs.

The revisions include moving a giant LED screen, creating additional parking spaces and landscaping, and reducing the size of the proposed 'Fun Factory' leisure venue.

It comes after council planning chiefs revealed earlier this year that they had a number of problems with the scheme, pushing back a decision on its future to this summer.

Civic centre staff asked the World Wheel Company to consider alternative sizes for the wheel, as well as raising concerns that it could become a "collision hazard" for helicopters and light aircraft.

Giants on the Quayside will include: The Whey Aye, which will be 16ft taller than the London Eye; The Geordie Giant, a 39ft steel human-shaped structure; a food and drink area called The Giant's Quay; and a family entertainment centre, giant sport deck and state-of-the-art virtual golf club called The Quayside Golf Club.
