Where's Nancy Guthrie's daughter Annie? Retired FBI agent thinks Annie Guthrie may be preparing for something major-here's what you need to know

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has now become far bigger than just a missing-persons investigation. As weeks have turned into months, attention has also shifted toward her family, especially her daughter Annie Guthrie and son-in-law Tommaso Cioni, who have largely vanished from public view.

That silence has only fueled more online speculation, even though investigators have repeatedly said the family is not involved. Now, a retired FBI agent believes there may be another reason the couple has stepped away from the spotlight altogether, as per a report by Tribune and TV Insider.

Where's Nancy Guthrie's daughter Annie?

The couple, once regularly mentioned during updates in the investigation, have seemingly stepped away from public view in recent weeks. Their absence has sparked even more speculation online, despite investigators repeatedly insisting the family is not connected to Nancy’s disappearance.

A retired FBI agent believes there may be a very different reason behind their silence. Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1 after investigators believe she was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home.

Despite months of investigation, no arrests have been announced and authorities still have not publicly identified a suspect. But even as law enforcement continues following leads, online speculation around Nancy’s daughter Annie Guthrie and her husband Tommaso “Tommy” Cioni has only intensified.

The couple were reportedly the last relatives to see Nancy before she vanished after sharing dinner with her on January 31.

Why are Annie Guthrie and her husband staying silent?

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer recently shared her thoughts about the situation in a lengthy post on X, where she questioned why Annie and Cioni had seemingly disappeared from public life, as per a report by Tribune.

“Why are they laying low?” Coffindaffer wrote. “Obvious concern over ridicule I believe, but also perhaps this: Defamation suits.”

According to Coffindaffer, the couple may be avoiding public appearances because of the intense online accusations they have faced since Nancy disappeared.

Early in the investigation, rumors exploded across social media after investigators temporarily seized the couple’s vehicle as part of routine evidence collection. Even though law enforcement later clarified the move was standard procedure, conspiracy theories quickly spread online.

Coffindaffer argued that the continued accusations may have caused lasting personal and professional damage.

“In most states, including Arizona, one has to prove that a falsehood was made, such as being accused of a crime, and that the person(s) suffered damage,” she explained.

Could online accusations lead to legal action?

The retired FBI agent suggested the online harassment may eventually become part of a potential legal case.

Coffindaffer pointed to the level of public scrutiny Annie and Cioni have faced, writing that some internet users have accused them not just of harming a stranger, “but worse, that they abducted/killed their mother.”

She also suggested the speculation may have affected their family life, including their young son Pietro.

Questions have additionally emerged about Cioni’s teaching career. Coffindaffer noted that the sixth-grade biology teacher no longer appears on his school’s current staff roster, though no public explanation has been provided.

“Perhaps he has taken leave or perhaps the school is concerned about listing his name since millions remain convinced he abducted his mother-in-law of 20 years. Either way, this action indicates damage to Tomasso,” Coffindaffer stated.

She argued that any impact on employment, reputation, income, or family wellbeing could potentially become evidence in a future defamation lawsuit.

“As I see it, their low profile, lack of band appearances, possible affects on work income, and what their child may be going through would all be part of such a suit in terms of damages,” she wrote, as per a report by Tribune and TV Insider.

What have investigators said about the Guthrie family?

Despite ongoing online speculation, authorities have repeatedly defended the Guthrie family and insisted they are not suspects.

During a February press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos strongly rejected accusations targeting Annie, Cioni, and other family members, as per a report by Tribune and TV Insider.

“The Guthrie family, to include all siblings and spouses, has been cleared as possible suspects,” Nanos said. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.”

Even after those statements, theories continued spreading online.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie has continued publicly supporting her sister and brother-in-law throughout the investigation, regularly sharing family photos and messages as the search for Nancy continues.

Investigators have also released doorbell camera footage showing a masked individual near Nancy’s property around the time she disappeared, though few additional details have been shared publicly.

Authorities remain tight-lipped about the evidence gathered so far, while Coffindaffer believes the family’s silence should not automatically be viewed with suspicion.

Instead, she suggested it may simply reflect how deeply the ongoing accusations have affected them during an already devastating ordeal.

Nancy Guthrie remains missing, investigators continue pursuing leads, and the questions surrounding the case continue growing with each passing week.
