Where Rodri is outperforming Fernandinho in Man City midfield role

Rodri has been the first to admit that he has work to do to master the holding midfield role at Manchester City .

That position, perfected by Fernandinho , has been crucial to the success of Pep Guardiola's side over the last few years and the former Atletico midfielder has not been allowed any time to settle on the job.

As the Premier League champions have struggled this season some fans have called on Fernandinho to return to his former role - although his manager has insisted he will remain in central defence.

Rodri showed improved form at Burnley in one of the best team performances of the season as they dominated the hosts at Turf Moor in a 4-1 win on Tuesday night, highlighting his productiveness when the side play on the front foot.

And he also popped up with his second goal of the season as he crashed in the third beyond Nick Pope. With some concern for what he could add to the team in attack following a season in Diego Simeone's mean machine, Rodri is outperforming expectations.

His two goals are only one fewer than his career best in a club campaign, and he is also on course to beat Fernandinho's best ever tally in the role under Guardiola. The Brazilian managed five in the Centurions campaign but only managed three in the previous year and one last season.

While Rodri can still improve the defensive aspect of the position, he is already adding more going forward.
