Where Marcelo Bielsa's focus is as in-form Leeds United return to top spot

Marcelo Bielsa is happy that Leeds United are in a strong position in the Championship, but is remaining level-headed and stressed how many months of the season are left.

Following the 4-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday, Leeds maintained their comfortable five-point gap over Fulham in third place.

They also went back top. West Brom could leapfrog them on Monday evening in their game against Preston, but only a win at Deepdale would do, with Leeds ahead on goal difference.

“It’s important,” responded Bielsa when asked about the significance of returning to the top.

“But we all know that it’s a long way forward. We have to give some value to the current position in the table because in a league like the Championship, the future is built match-by-match.

“But the most important is the regularity in every match to make a difference. We cannot talk about regularity if we don’t let the league go more forward.”

This was the first time in Leeds United’s 100-year history that they’ve won every single game in the month of November, going on a streak of five straight victories.

The Whites have four more points at the same stage as last season, boast the best defensive record in the division, and are on a hot goalscoring streak with 11 goals from the last five games.

But Bielsa was keen to stress there are still improvements to be made and work to be done, with the wins at Luton and Reading only secured through late winners, the former an injury-time own goal from Matthew Pearson and the latter an 87th-minute counter-attack finished off by Jack Harrison.

“One part of the competition where you win five matches always is good,” he added.

“But we also know we won two matches at the end of the match against Luton and Reading, so there are a lot of details we have to analyse and take into account.

“It's not just winning, you have to analyse how you win every match.”
