Where Manchester United stand on Paul Pogba's contract and his transfer options

When Paul Pogba left Manchester United as a teenager on a free transfer in 2012, few expected him to return years later.

When he did, it was for £89million in a huge 2016 transfer, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would believe he would once again be allowed to walk out the door with his contract expiring. But that is exactly what could happen this summer.

From January 1st 2022, Pogba will be able to speak to any club he wants outside of England and United will have to sit back and wait for the Frenchman to make his mind up.

Real Madrid and Juventus are the most likely destination should the 28-year-old decide his future lies away from Old Trafford once again.

Reports suggest that the midfielder is happy at the club and the summer arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to be enough for him to commit his future in Manchester.

But a a new contract has still not been signed, with reports suggestion Pogba rejected the club's offer.

Currently side-lined with an injury which rules him out of action until January, here is the very latest on Pogba's United future :

Exit inevitable?

After Pogba's straight red card in the 5-0 loss to Liverpool, many saw that as the another point of no return for the midfielder.

He was only on the pitch for 15 minutes and in that time had lost the ball as Liverpool went on to add a fifth and then a reckless lunge had him heading for an early bath.

Days later, ESPN reported that that sources told them that the club were bracing themselves for a summer exit for the World Cup and Nations League winner.

Interested teams are said to be willing to wait until his contract runs out instead of stumping up a transfer fee in January.

Agent breaks silence

Pogba's agent Mino Raiola is not the most popular figure given his ability to speak his mind when it comes to his client's future.

With a proposed contract rejected from Pogba's side in the summer, Raiola told The Times that clarification around contract talks would have to come from United.

"At this moment everything is calm. There is no update."

Demands must be met

With each passing day, the liklihood of Pogba signing a new deal decreases.

But according to French media outlet L'Equipe, sources say the midfielder is open to extending his stay at Old Trafford.

But in order for that to happen, he must become the highest paid earner at the club which will see him leapfrog Cristiano Ronaldo and pocket over £500,000 a week.
