Where Light Falls: St Paul's Cathedral illuminated by photographic tribute to forgotten heroes of the Blitz

St Paul's Cathedral is being lit with an illuminated tribute to the forgotten heroes of the Blitz who kept the building safe at the height of the Second World War.

The volunteers of the wartime St Paul’s Watch, who stood guard over the building as bombing raids destroyed much of London, will be remembered in Where Light Falls — a mixture of poetry and projections running over four nights from tomorrow.

The building’s facade will be transformed after dark with archive photographs and animations telling the story of its survival while a tribute in verse, written by poet Keith Jarrett, will be brought to life on its walls.

The cathedral was lit up early on the morning of October 23 for a test.

Ellen Harrison from Historic England said: “Winston Churchill said St Paul’s must be saved at all costs because he knew that if it was damaged in any way it would be seen to represent the morale of the nation, and we know from people’s accounts at the time if they were to come out of the Tube stations after a big raid and saw St Paul’s was still standing, there was still hope.”
