Where Leeds United's Manchester United thrashing sits in Whites' record defeats

Leeds United and their fans are licking their wounds this morning following their Sunday evening humbling at Old Trafford.

Marcelo Bielsa's men suffered a 6-2 defeat to their bitter rivals Manchester United in a match where they lost they found themselves 2-0 down after just three minutes, immediately spoiling fans' hopes of upsetting their old foes in their first encounter back in the Premier League.

It was match that brought about chance after chance for both sides, with Illan Meslier making no less than eight saves and ensure that his side did not suffer a record defeat.

While this defeat by a four-goal margin was the heaviest loss of the Marcelo Bielsa era, the strikes from Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas ensure that it is not Leeds' record Premier League defeat.

Leeds have lost by five-goal margins three times since English football's great branding of 1992, two of which came in the 2003-04 relegation campaign.

The likes of Roque Junior and Jody Morris were present as Leeds suffered 6-1 reverse at Portsmouth on November 8, 2003 which was enough to see Peter Reid sacked.

Eddie Gray, perhaps the most faithful servant in club history, took over for the rest of the season, inheriting a team heading for relegation and also suffered a fifth-goal defeat, as Thierry Henry put four past a shellsocked Whites defence under the Friday night lights at Highbury as Arsenal's Invincibles cantered to a 5-0 defeat on April 16.

Leeds suffered one more five-goal defeat during their first Premier League stint, as Liverpool took full advantage of a Gary Kelly red card to net four times in the final half hour and record a 5-0 win over Howard Wilkinson's side at Anfield on January 20, 1996.

Sunday was not the first 6-2 defeat Leeds have suffered in the Premier League either, with Wilkinson's side going down by that same scoreline a month before the afore mentioned Liverpool defeat.

When it comes to Leeds' all-time record defeat, none of these get close to the 8-1 thrashing at the hands of Stoke from August 1934.
