Where is Whaley Bridge and when was Toddbrook Reservoir dam built?

There is currently a big emergency services presence in Derbyshire over fears a reservoir could collapse.

Toddbrook Reservoir in High Peak appears to have suffered substantial damage after days of intense rain and flooding up and down the country.

The town is now being evacuated as the Environment Agency issued a severe 'danger to life' flood warning on Thursday afternoon.

The dam overlooks Whaley Bridge, a small  town along Buxton Road just off the A6, on the River Goyt.

The River Goyt is what formed the historical boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire .

It is located around 16 miles southeast of Manchester and nine miles east of Macclesfield.

Toddbrook Reservoir is often a location used by walkers thanks to its variety of walking trails and it is also used for sailing and angling with its own sailing club.

The reservoir, which was built 1831 as a feeder for the Peak Forest Canal, an artificial waterway in the north of England, is also classed as a Sit of Special Scientific Interest which means it is a protected area.

Todd Brook itself is a small river that runs through the Cheshire and Derbyshire counties which rises beneath Shining Tor, a hill in the Peak District, flowing northwards through east Cheshire before turning east and the water fills the Toddbrook Reservoir.

The railway station in Whaley Bridge has a regular service to Manchester which is used by those who travel to work in the city or Cheshire area.
