A woman is outraged after she says her Ninja Crispi exploded on just the second use. And the internet is arguing over whether to blame her or the manufacturer.
TikTok user Kelsey (@kwkelsey) posted a video about the occurrence on July 2. The video shows the remains of Kelsey’s Ninja Crispi air fryer. Its glass bowl is in pieces on the counter.
“Safe to say it’s NOT safe to use a Ninja air fryer,” she wrote in the video’s on-screen text. In the caption, she continued, “So, my Ninja glass air fryer blew up the second time using it.”
What is the Ninja Crispi?
The Crispi is a portable glass air fryer sold by the company SharkNinja. Retailing for approximately $180, the Crispi is designed to make the traditional air fryer experience more portable. Shark advertises the Crispi as a way to make quick single-serve meals or snacks while on the go. The 1500-watt fryer is supposed to get up to 450 degrees.
According to the website, the Crispi’s glassware is thermal shock resistant, which means you can take food “from frozen to crispy in minutes.”
Some viewers blame Kelsey
In the comments section, some viewers said they own a Ninja Crispi and nothing like this ever happened at their home. “User error,” wrote one person. “Did you just take the bowl out of the fridge?” asked a second.
However, many users came to Kelsey’s defense. “Just saying. Ninja advertises this as going from fridge to air fryer in the same bowl. It’s NOT a user error.”
“‘Oh, you put something cold in it?’ That’s not how temperature shock works!” wrote another person. “Even if she did, a piece of frozen salmon would not cause the entire thing to explode.”
User error or thermal shock?
Thermal shock is what happens to glass when it is subjected to a sudden change in temperature. Think about pouring boiling hot water into a cold glass and how it would shatter.
Now, the Ninja Crispi is made of borosilicate glass, which is—as many in the comments pointed out—supposed to be able to withstand sudden changes in temperature.
However, it’s important to note that, while considered generally tougher than ordinary glass, borosilicate glass can still break. Some changes in temperature might be too sudden for it to handle.
