Where is The Last Czars filmed? Inside the Netflix drama's beautiful locations

Netflix 's new historical docuseries The Last Czars has been gripping viewers as it focuses on the enthralling story of the last Czar, Nicholas II of Russia , and his family and confidantes.

The documentary/drama series focuses on the social upheaval in Russia in the early 20th century, as Nicholas II and his family failed to adapt to the changes, sparking a revolution which ended their dynasty.

As well as the gripping drama, the spectacular backdrops have caught viewers' attention - and the good news is that they're not the result of a film set, but real-life locations you can visit.

Although the series is set in Russia, it was actually filmed across a host of locations in Lithuania.

Producer Hereward Pelling told Broadcast Now that some filming also took place in Latvia and Estonia.

We take a look at some of the filming locations in the show...

Vilnius, Lithuania

The bulk of the filming took place in the Lithuanian capital, with locations around the city including the Orthodox Cathedral of The Dormition of The Theotoko.

It's not difficult to see why Vilnius caught producers' attention; the Old Town boasts picturesque streets and historic architecture, while the fairytale-esque Trakai Island Castle is home to the impressive 16th century Gate of Dawn.

If you are inspired to visit then you may want to book a trip this year as Vilnius has been named the cheapest city breaks for Brits in 2019 .

Verkiai Palace, Lithuania

The 18th century mansion has everything you could want for a setting fit for royalty. We're talking ridiculously ornate interiors, lavish decor, plush furniture, high ceilings and ballrooms.

Located in the city of Vilnius, this palace tends to be a hit with visitors not only because of the history and its impressive architecture, but the landscaped gardens and park which surround it are the ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.

Rumsiskes, Lithuania

Rumsiskes is home to the Lithuanian Folk Museum, an open air museum that also doubled up as a backdrop for filming of the Netflix series.

The picturesque town is also known for its location on the northern bank of Kaunas Reservoir, as well as highlights including the 18th century St. Michael Archangel church.

Rundale Palace, Latvia

Nicholas II and his family lived in the Alexander Palace about 30 miles south of St Petersburg, but nowadays the palace is a museum paying tribute to the dynasty.

However when it came to filming the TV series, the cast and crew headed to Latvia where the spectacular Rundale Palace served as a replacement.

It's no surprise it caught the crew's attention with its ornate Baroque architecture and lavish interiors - it could give the Palace of Versailles a run for its money.

The palace is actually open to the public if you do fancy a visit.  You can find out more on the Rundale Palace website .
