Where is the best place to watch the Great North Run? Here are some top spots

For those who fancy getting in on this year’s Great North Run action without breaking a sweat, watching the famous race from a prime vantage point along its route is the way to do it.

Whether you’re going to support someone taking part in the world’s biggest half-marathon, or just want to catch a glimpse of some legendary athletes involved, the Great North Run is undoubtedly a spectator sport – with a ton of activities, entertainment and vantage points right along the runners’ route.

Then the 41st Great North Run takes place on Sunday, September 11 where runners will tackle the 13.1-mile Great North Run route, which this year does not go to South Shields but runs in a loop from Newcastle through Gateshead and back over the Tyne Bridge.

While the runners will be pounding the streets, there will be hundreds of spectators lining the roadside cheering and supporting the competitors, but where is the best place to watch the run?

What is the route of the Great North Run?

Starting in Newcastle, the 13.1 mile Great North Run route takes runners through the city centre towards the River Tyne where thousands of people will cross over the iconic Tyne Bridge.

From there, runners will travel through Gateshead while being entertained many bands on the run. The route, lined by thousands of supporters, leads runners to South Shields for a big finish on The Leas.

Where is the best place to watch the half marathon?

Spectators line the streets along the most of the route, although if you want a good view it might be worth getting there early to avoid disappointment.

Key vantage points are the start of the run too catch some of the pre-race atmosphere, and you can stand on one of the bridges over the central motorway to see everyone pass below. Or head down to the Tyne Bridge to watch the runners pass by.

You can just choose one place to see them - at the race start, or somewhere on the route, or at the race finish - to avoid getting stuck travelling from place to another.
