Where is Sex Education filmed? All the Welsh filming locations as Netflix releases season 3 trailer

By Talya Honebeek

Netflix has released a brand new trailer for the Sex Education season three, which is set to be released later this month.

Asa Butterfield is back in action as Otis, the teenager with a sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson) who decides to start an underground sex therapy clinic at school.

After season two’s big cliffhanger — which (spoiler) saw Otis finally confess his feelings for Maeve, only for his voicemail to be deleted — fans are excited to see what’s next for our favourite Moordale Secondary characters.

The trailer also gives fans a glimpse of some of the show’s new characters, including Jemima Kirke as Hope Haddon, the new headmistress on a mission to restore the school to a “pillar of excellence”.

But where is Sex Education filmed and which locations can you visit? Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the new season.

Where is Netflix’s Sex Education filmed?

Sex Education isn’t just known for its raunchy content, but also its stunning backdrops, with all three seasons of the Netflix show filmed in some of Wales’ most beautiful locations.

From Tintern and Llandogo to Penarth and Llandudno, here are all of the filming locations used in the show:

Rhondda Bowl, Tonyrefail

First look photos for the upcoming third season of Sex Education show Eric (played by Ncuti Gatwa), Adam (Connor Swindells) and Ruby (Mimi Keene) playing a game of bowling at Rhondda Bowl.

Fans of the show wanting to recreate the scene can book their own game at the popular retro-80s-look venue.

Llandogo

Located two miles north of Tintern, Llandogo is a Monmouthshire village set on the River Wye. It has a pub, church and village hall, and can be seen in Sex Education as the show cuts away from the main action.

Tintern

Speaking of Tintern, the village’s old railway bridge, which was built for the Tintern Wireworks factory in the 1880s, provided the backdrop for Otis and Eric’s daily cycle to school in season one.

University of South Wales’ Caerleon campus

Known for its focal clock tower and American high school vibes, the real-life Moordale School is in fact the University of South Wales’ Caerleon campus.

The campus once played host to some 4,500 students before closing in 2016 following a merger of the Universities of Wales, Newport and Glamorgan to create the University of South Wales.

The Paget Rooms

Not all of the scenes set in Moordale School are actually filmed in the disused university campus, however.

For the school gym and hall scenes, it’s the Paget Rooms, a Grade-II listed theatre in Penarth, that viewers can see.

Day-to-day, the theatre acts as the town’s public hall, with all kinds of events — from weddings to concerts — being hosted in the early 20th Century building.

Browns Village Stores

The shop where Ola (Patricia Allison) and Rahim (Sami Outalbali) work is actually a real shop in Llandogo which has been operating since 1928.

Roger and Ruth Brown have been running the shop since 1958, with Roger telling the Guardian: “We are being asked about the show continually now. It is amazing. And I haven’t seen it yet as I don’t have Netflix.

“People stop when they see our name, which they kept for the show. So it is doing very well for us, which is lovely.”

When is the Sex Education season 3 release date?

Sex Education season three will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday, September 17.
