Where is musician Maverick Sabre now - star's journey since 'I Need' as RTE's Reeling In The Years brings back memories

Maverick Sabre appeared on RTE's Reeling In The Years on Sunday night as his 2011 song "I Need" was used for a big chunk of the show.

But many people may not have heard from the singer since, with his hits afterwards never quite reaching the same level of popularity.

The now 30-year-old was born in London but moved to New Ross in Co Wexford when he was four.

He is known for unique voice and song writing.

In his teenage years before his debut album, Maverick Sabre was cleaning toilets and dirty plates in his hometown in Ireland as the soul singer was trying to earn enough money to pursue his dream to play music to the masses.

He quite literally threw the kitchen sink at the music industry and has since realized his dream after selling out the London Jazz Club and performing on the main stage at a music festival.

How did he start performing?

“I started gigging at 15 and I finished school two years after to join the Irish hit hop scene so a lot has changed for me. When I was 17 I was cleaning toilets and cleaning dishes… now I’m playing a full set at festivals,” Maverick previously told the Mirror.

“I sold out the jazz club in London last week and the majority of the songs I played I didn’t need to sing the words because everyone knew them.

“I’m very critical of myself so when someone told me the jazz club had sold out I thought that someone must have got it wrong or were joking with me.

“But then when I heard people singing the lyrics back to me, it was deep and it took me back. I was on stage and couldn’t stop smiling I could feel the hairs stand up on my back. I love music, I love the vibe.”

Big moments in his career and debut album

Maverick released his debut album Lonely are the Brave in 2012 and grew a dedicated fan base.

He added: “It’s the purist creation that’s going. When you have a conversation with someone and say a bunch of words there’s usually only one or two ways to interoperate it. But with music you have the notes and vocals and strings and drumbeats you can make something grow within yourself.

“When you hear something in a song, like the strings in Wonderwall by Oasis, you can’t explain the feeling can you? It’s pure. There’s hardly anything left in the world that’s pure so I’m so grateful to have music.”

He made a hit to the charts in a collaboration with rapper Professor Green on the track Jungle.

Songs such as I Need, Let me Go and No One were all popular tracks from his debut record.

Where is he now?

Before his big success, Maverick returned to London on the advice of rapper Plan B to pursue his career in music.

Maverick released two more albums, Innerstanding in 2015 and When I wake UP in 2019.

He released an EP You Know How It Feels’ release on 24 July, 2020 and admitted that he was inspired during lockdown.

Maverick posted on Instagram last March: "Live music is needed for our souls, it’s our therapy.

"Our sessions will resume again soon.

"Till then it’s always love. (I’m working on a lot of new music, sorry for the wait. Once it starts I’m not stopping."
