Where is Murder Island filmed? The Scottish location where mystery drama is set explored

People up and down the country found themselves glued to their TV screens last night as brand new reality programme Murder Island aired on Channel 4.

The competition, which sees four pairs of amateur sleuths battle it to solve a murder, is written by acclaimed Edinburgh crime author Ian Rankin.

Four teams of two have been given the task of working out who a fictional murder suspect is under the watchful eye of three police experts. Whoever correctly arrests the murderer first are the winners and will get their hands on £50,000.

Ian Rankin described the process of writing the show as: "It's such a dangerous thing to try to do, it’s mad! But it stretched me in all kinds of ways because this isn’t normally the way I operate.

“It was a challenge but a really entertaining one, and it kept me sane in the first few months of the year when we were still in lockdown.”

But where is Murder Island actually filmed and is the island of Hirsa a real place?

Where is Murder Island filmed?

The six-part series is set on the fictional island of Hirsa.

Like the rest of the show, the plot and setting was made up by Rankin and so Hirsa doesn't actually exist.

Murder Island was actually filmed on the Scottish island of Gigha during the summer of this year.

The island is part of Argyll and Bute and is the perfect location to host a realistic murder mystery game.

Found off the Kintyre coast, Gigha has a minuscule population of more than 160 people - there are very few amenities with only one pub, shop and a primary school to serve the community.

Over the years there have been various shipwrecks along the rocks of the island which make the location look even creepier.

So, it's safe to say that the island was a perfect setting for Ian Rankin's mystery.

The next episode of Murder Island is on Tuesday, October 12 , at 9.30pm on Channel 4.
