Where is it easiest to find a job? Newcastle beats Sunderland and Middlesbrough

A North-South jobs divide both within the region and with other parts of the country has been revealed in a new study.

Figures produced by the jobs search engine Adzuna show a big difference between the number of jobs available in Newcastle , and the opportunities in both Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Sunderland and Middlesbrough were only kept off the bottom of the national table by Hull, with more than two jobseekers for every vacancy on Wearside and 1.6 on Teesside.

By contrast, there were five jobs for every person looking for work in Newcastle, with the city being ranked above places like Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh in terms of jobs available.

The Adzuna figures come a day after the latest official figures on unemployment showed that joblessness was on the rise in the North East, bucking a national trend which sees it falling in most other parts of the country.

Nationally, Cambridge and Oxford are the best cities to find a job in the UK, with up to 25 times more vacancies than jobseekers. The IT sector is leading the jobs boom in the two cities, with hundreds of vacancies in tech companies, including video game developers.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “All of the top five cities to find a job currently sit in the South, with cities like Hull and Sunderland continuing to play catch-up with their southern counterparts.

“With up to 25 times more jobs on offer than people to fill them, jobhunters in these top areas are in a great position to negotiate on pay, perks and holiday packages.”

All of the top five cities for job opportunities in the UK were in the south, with Manchester ranked sixth and Warrington seventh. Newcastle’s position as 21st city of the 54 ranked nationally made it the fifth top in the North.

Towns and cities at the top of the table for the number of jobs available also tended to have higher salaries on offer, with the average in Cambridge £8,500 higher than average wages in Hull.
