Where is Federico Fernandez and what's happening with Newcastle United's director of football?

Eddie Howe's first game in charge of Newcastle United ended in a draw - with the Magpies shipping three goals to Brentford at St James' Park.

It was a game that reaffirmed what we already knew - going forward the Magpies are a threat but at the back they are vulnerable.

Both Mark Douglas and Andrew Musgrove were at St James' Park to take in the game - and joined forces on The Everything is Black and White Podcast to discuss the result, the performance and much more.

The talking points included just how Howe fixes Newcastle's defensive issue, what is happening with Federico Fernandez, the battle for number one, and whether the Magpies will be able to persuade players like James Tarkowski to join this January.

Mark also addresses the set-up at Newcastle away from the pitch and the ongoing search for a director of football.

"It may not be the news people want to hear," he said, "but I think there's still a fair bit of work to be done on getting the power lines sorted behind the scenes.

"Some elements of the consortium would go one way and others, another way.

"Michael Emenalo has been mentioned and has several rounds of talks with the hierarchy but it's getting those things decided.

"I heard a few weeks that they hadn't decided fully on the structure so that is ponderous in my opinion and they need to get it all sorted before January.

"Other people will tell you that it's ready to go and an announcement isn't too far away.

"It's something they do need to resolve fairly quickly."
