- The second full moon of the year, known as the worm moon, will be visible across large parts of the UK on Tuesday evening.
- It is expected to be clearest in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, with cloudier conditions anticipated in the south.
- While a full lunar eclipse (blood moon) was visible earlier in parts of Asia, Australia, North America, and South America, the UK will not see the distinctive red colouring.
- Dr Ed Bloomer of the Royal Observatory Greenwich explained that this is because the eclipse portion is below the horizon for the UK, meaning observers will see the moon but not its reddening.
- The worm moon is believed to be named after worms emerging from the soil to mate during spring.
