Where Home Alone was filmed including the McCallister family's house

Home Alone is a classic Christmas film. A family favourite that never gets old, the comedy follows the story of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) who is mistakenly left behind when the family head off on a trip to Paris.

Initially, he makes the most of having the house to himself, until he realises that two con men (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) have plans to rob his family home - so he gets ready to protect the residence with some creative traps.

The story is set in Illinois, so it comes as no surprise that the US state was where the bulk of filming took place, despite the family heading to the European city for their winter break.

In fact, the village of Winnetka offered up most of the locations including the incredible McCallister home, the shops where Kevin ventures out for food and a toothbrush, as well as many of the chase scenes when Kevin escapes the clutches of the con men.

Other Illinois locations include O'Hare International Airport which plays the role of the airport in Paris where Kevin's mother (played by Catherine O'Hara) tries to urgently get on a flight back to return to her son.

As for the McCallister home, with its huge impressive facade and countless rooms?

It wasn't a set - it's a real life home. The property, whose address is 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, was used for plenty of exterior and interior shots.

Nowadays it still draws in tourists who want to get a glimpse of the 'Home Alone' house, although the current residents have installed a fence to ensure that any film buffs watch from afar. (We imagine it would be disconcerting to have people constantly coming up to your home to get a look!).

The house's fame has become part of the village. Locals previously opened up to local media about what it was like when filming was ongoing, from the fake snow used to create the Christmas atmosphere, to the production equipment causing some power outages in the area.
