Michah Richards believes Manchester City's Phil Foden is most effective when used in central areas of the pitch.
Foden has enjoyed a sensational start to the season for City and is now regarded as one the first names on the teamsheet for manager Pep Guardiola.
On Saturday, he was on the scoresheet twice in the emphatic 4-1 win over Brighton and tormented the opposition defence with his movement, dribbling skill and incredible awareness in possession.
While he played with a lot of freedom, Foden lined up at the point of the attack for City at the Amex Stadium. It's a position he's been used in already this season by Guardiola, as well as on the left and right flanks, along with in central midfield.
Foden also played in a deeper midfield position for England recently, showcasing pinpoint long passing ability.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club on BBC Radio 5 Live, Richards said he thinks Foden will have a bigger impact in central positions.
"I think going forward, anything centrally," said the ex-City defender. "He could play deep and centrally to dictate, like a quarterback. He could play no.8, up and down. He could play no.10.
"I think sometimes with England because the other players are not on the same wavelength technically sometimes or even tactically or the way that Man City want to press...sometimes he can be left isolated in areas where he doesn't really want to be.
"I think for him to have the most impact, anywhere centrally. Because he can dictate."
Richards added that the way in which City play means Foden is capable of being effective in almost any attacking position on the pitch.
"In that no.8 and no.10, that suits him the best for me. In the Man City squad he can play wherever he wants because they've all got a role in the team and whether he's playing on the right, left, central he knows his role.
"He's an extraordinary talent and as long as he plays at that same tempo and keeps his feet on the ground, he could be one of the best players England has ever produced."
