Even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently advised citizens to focus on saving money rather than excessive spending — a rare but significant message reflecting the economic pressures faced by many households today.
Amid this backdrop, a social media post highlighting the monthly expenses of a married couple living in Bengaluru has gone viral, triggering widespread discussion online about whether the city has become too expensive to live in.
A ₹1.3 Lakh Monthly Expense Breakdown
The viral post, shared on X by Nalini Unagar, detailed the lifestyle expenses of a couple — Radhika and Ekansh — both of whom work full-time as product managers while also creating content on social media.
According to the post, the couple spends approximately ₹1,30,000 every month, excluding vacations and luxury purchases.
Their monthly expenses reportedly include:
₹56,000 for rent
₹15,000 for electricity and internet
₹3,000 for subscriptions
₹15,000 for groceries
₹10,000 for dining out
₹6,000 for commuting
₹15,000 for shopping
₹10,000 for domestic help
The post pointed out that despite earning high salaries, the couple finds it difficult to save money by the end of the month due to Bengaluru’s rising living costs.
“Bengaluru may offer high salaries, but the cost of living can be just as high. For many people, saving money has become harder than ever,” Nalini Unagar wrote in her post.
Social Media Divided Over ‘Luxury vs Necessity’
The expense breakdown quickly sparked mixed reactions online. While some users sympathized with the couple and agreed that life in Tier-1 cities like Bengaluru has become increasingly expensive, others argued that several expenses reflected lifestyle choices rather than essential spending.
One user commented that inflation is making it difficult even for people earning over ₹1 crore annually to save money, adding that many professionals are reconsidering major life decisions such as having children due to rising costs.
Others, however, criticized the spending habits shown in the post. Several users questioned expenses such as ₹10,000 spent on eating out, ₹15,000 on shopping, and ₹3,000 on subscriptions every month, calling them avoidable or excessive.
Another user pointed out that internet services in Bengaluru are relatively affordable and suggested that better budgeting and financial planning could significantly reduce monthly expenses.
The Reality of Life in India’s Tech Capital
Over the years, Bengaluru has earned a reputation not only as India’s technology hub but also as one of its most expensive cities. Rising rent prices, increasing utility bills, transportation costs, and lifestyle spending have made it difficult for many young professionals to maintain savings despite high-paying jobs. While some believe the viral expense sheet reflects an aspirational urban lifestyle rather than a survival budget, others see it as a realistic glimpse into the financial pressures faced by dual-income households in metropolitan India. The discussion has once again highlighted a growing concern among urban professionals — whether rising salaries in major cities are truly enough to keep up with rapidly increasing living expenses.
