Where does the Great North Run 2021 finish?

This year's Great North Run will start and finish in Newcastle due to a route change to help reduce congestion.

The new Great North Run route means runners will cross the Tyne Bridge twice, and face an uphill ending to their 13.1 race.

Runners will mostly be heading downhill for the first 1.5 miles to the Tyne Bridge, with a few brief uphill climbs.

Once in Gateshead, the inclines really begin, with around a 20 metre gain in elevation from the Tyne Bridge to Park Lane and Park Road in Gateshead, dropping again around 2.25 miles into the race.

There is a gentle drop to the third mile, near Gateshead International Stadium, then the route hits the 'big hill' on the Felling Bypass, climbing to 65 metres at mile five.

This year, runners get the pleasure of going down the big hill as well as up, so expect a drop at eight miles, between Heworth Metro Station and Gateshead Stadium on the return leg.

There is another incline shortly after mile nine, peaking at mile 10 close to Gateshead town centre. It's then downhill from there until mile 11, when runners hit the Tyne Bridge on the way back to Newcastle.

While the usual South Shields route has a flat ending, the 2021 course will rise in elevation from 25 metres to around 63 metres from mile 11 from when runners re-enter Newcastle to the finish line along the Great North Road.

The route's final stages go through Newcastle city centre, so the crowd will be cheering on runners through the final slog.

South Shields is set to return as the Great North Run finishing line in 2022.
