Where does Miami Dolphins offensive line overhaul stand?

The Miami Dolphins’ offensive is going to look drastically different than the one we saw in 2019. That isn’t necessarily breaking news — but the first round of reinforcements are officially in the building. Where do the Dolphins still need help? Perhaps the best way to identify the roles that Miami will still need to address is to lay out the blueprint for Miami’s offensive line and key on where the major holes still exist.

Projected 2020 Dolphins offensive line as of 3/23:

Left Tackle – Julien Davenport
Left Guard – Ereck Flowers
Center – Ted Karras
Right Guard – Michael Deiter
Right Tackle – Jesse Davis

This group probably has three 2020 starters in the building already with Flowers and Karras as free agent additions and the presence of veteran Jesse Davis. Davis seems to have the affection of the coaching staff — expect to see him get a look as a potential long-term starter in 2020. That may ultimately come at guard or tackle.

But for now, the Dolphins’ tackle group needs all the stability possible — and so Davis’ projection remains at Right Tackle.

The Dolphins will enter the 2020 NFL Draft in need of finding two starting offensive linemen. Both may not come in this year’s draft, but ideally they could. If the Dolphins could land a left tackle via the 1st-round and an interior OL on the draft’s second day (Rounds 2 & 3), Miami’s starting overhaul would be complete.

And if it comes to that, the Dolphins would be wise to continue to gloss over the free agency field on the line and look to pluck up a few veterans on 1-year contracts as we get closer to the season. Miami fans unfortunately know all too well that there’s no such thing as too much depth up front — and the Dolphins have almost none.
