Where does Dublin rank in the cities of the world pollution index?

With all the recent talk of climate change it's easy to assume that Dublin doesn't produce much pollution due to its size.

But that is not necessarily the case, as we actually produce more pollution than some of the world's biggest cities.

By using information taken from the pollution index on numbeo.com, Dublin ranks an impressive 210 out of 288 in the major cities in the world.

According to the index, the rankings are an estimation of the overall pollution in the city, with the biggest weight is given to air pollution, than to water pollution/accessibility, two main pollution factors.

Smaller weight is given to other pollution types.

The biggest polluters are predominantly African and Eastern cities, with Accra - the capital of Ghana - ranked first on the list.

However, some surprising places produce less pollution than us, with cities such as San Francisco, Cape Town, San Diego, and Brasilia all ranking below us despite their size and population density.

When it comes to just Europe, we rank 53rd out of 82, with Helsinki, Finland seen as the best and Tetovo, Macedonia, seen as the worst.

Canberra, the capital of Australia, ranks the lowest on the list, with European cities generally ranking lower while American, African, and Eastern cities are generally the biggest hitters.
