Where does Colts defense/special teams rank in fantasy football?

When it comes to fantasy football, big names like Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton dominate the conversation for the Indianapolis Colts but what about the defense?

Mostly an afterthought this decade in terms of production, there is significant promise for the Colts defense entering the 2019 season. As the depth grows, so does their ranking among the defense and special teams in fantasy football.

Following a surprisingly solid finish in 2018, the Colts D/ST was ranked 10th in fantasy football by Sporting News.

10. Indianapolis Colts. The Colts ranked 11th in D/ST fantasy points last year thanks in large part to 26 takeaways. However, they didn’t score a D/ST touchdown and had a decent-but-not-great 38 sacks. With Justin Huston in tow and a bunch of talented rookies added to the roster, the Colts could be poised for a real breakout this year.

For those wondering, this was how their top-10 unfolded among fantasy defenses:

  1. Chicago Bears
  2. Los Angeles Chargers
  3. Los Angeles Rams
  4. New England Patriots
  5. Pittsburgh Steelers
  6. Kansas City Chiefs
  7. Minnesota Vikings
  8. Denver Broncos
  9. Houston Texans
  10. Indianapolis Colts

Some leagues are going away from using a defense in fantasy football while others are modifying the scoring format. Seeing as the default scoring penalizes yards and points against, some leagues feature simply a points against scoring format.

Regardless, the Colts defense should be better on paper this year. The depth is incredibly better, and they have added some solid assets to the unit—including the aforementioned Houston.

The pass rush is what will take the unit further than expected and come draft day, the Colts are a worthy selection in the final round.
