Where does Cardiff City's huge win over Brighton leave them in Premier League relegation showdown

Cardiff City's Premier League survival hopes were kept alive by a crucial away win at Brighton on Tuesday night.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's curled strike and Sean Morrison's header was enough for Neil Warnock's side to come away with three points in what was simply a must-win fixture.

The Bluebirds now sit just two points behind Brighton, although the Seagulls have a game in hand on Cardiff.

But while defeat on the south coast would certainly have put them on the brink of a return to the Championship, this victory will ensure the relegation battle could go down to the wire - even if Brighton are still in pole position to stay up ahead of Cardiff.

'Messi-like' - Cardiff City star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's Brighton beauty leaves Bluebirds fans stunned

Looking at the run-ins of the five teams, Southampton, Newcastle and Burnley should all be safe - even if there doesn't appear to be a great deal of points on offer for any of the three clubs.

Despite having a game in hand, Brighton's final five games could see the south coast side struggle to pick up points - with Wolves, Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester City the sides Chris Hughton's outfit have left to face this season.

With a game fewer, there is a glimmer of hope for Warnock. Their run-in is bookended by matches against Liverpool and Manchester United, which is likely to result in Cardiff getting nothing from the two clashes.

But a visit to doomed Fulham and the visit of Crystal Palace to the Cardiff City Stadium are crucial matches if they are to overhaul Brighton and stay in the top flight for a second season.
