Where Cristiano Ronaldo fits into Man City transfer plans

Manchester City have ignored the opportunity to entertain signing Cristiano Ronaldo as they focus on landing Harry Kane to Tottenham.

The Blues have been clear that a striker was their priority in this transfer window for at least a year, and that intensified after the decision to let record goalscorer Sergio Aguero leave on a free transfer this summer.

As M.E.N Sport reported yesterday, Ronaldo can be bracketed alongside Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann on the list of elite forwards that have been suggested to City to no avail as the club continue their pursuit of Kane. The plan is to spend the majority of the fortnight working on reaching an agreement with Daniel Levy over his prized asset.

On top of that, there are a multitude of reasons why Ronaldo remains almost certain not to join City. When the club have walked away from their priority targets in the past they have not turned to alternatives, the 36-year-old would not be a straight fit into a Pep Guardiola team, and is also on record saying he would never join City given his United past. It would be an incredibly difficult sell for all.

However, sometimes things are out of a club's control - such as Dortmund pricing Erling Haaland out of a move this summer - and the fact that Ronaldo and Griezmann have been offered to them leaves an interesting question lurking should City's attempts to sign Kane fall flat with time left in the window.

Ronaldo's lengthy social media post on Tuesday night to 'set out his position' about the 'actual truth' never actually mentioned his current club Juventus. Should City fail to land Kane, the temptation to at least consider an alternative would be there - particularly if the slow start to the season in front of goal continues against Norwich and Arsenal.

For now though, all of the focus remains on the Tottenham striker.
