Where Covid infections are rising, and who is catching it

The proportion of people testing positive for Covid-19 is estimated to have increased sharply in London, with other increases in Eastern England, the East Midlands and south-east England, the ONS said.

Rates have continued to decrease in north-west England and Yorkshire & the Humber.

The East Midlands has the highest rate (with an estimated 1.4% of people in private households testing positive for Covid-19), followed by London (1.4%) and north-east England (1.2%).

South-west England has the lowest rate (0.4%).

When modelling the level of infection among different age groups in England, the ONS said rates have increased in most age groups, except for young adults (school year 12 to age 24) and 50 to 69-year-olds.

Rates had been decreasing among young adults but this trend appears to have levelled off.

Rates remain highest among secondary school-aged children (school years 7 to 11).

In Wales, the percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19 has increased in recent weeks, the ONS said.

An estimated 33,400 people in private households had Covid-19 between December 6 and 12 – the equivalent of 1.10% of the population.

This is up from an estimated 25,600 people for the period November 29 to December 5, or 0.84% of the population.

Because of the relatively small number of tests and low number of positives in its Wales sample, results should be interpreted with caution, the ONS added.
