Where can I take charity shop clothes and items in Edinburgh during the coronavirus pandemic?

Full lockdown in the UK officially began on the 23 March and for weeks Edinburgh locals have been trapped indoors either unable to work or spending far more time at home.

Because of this many people are taking to some spring cleaning to take their mind of the pandemic and this can often lead to a big clean out of old clothes and items.

However, all charity shops were closed due to being "non-essential' shops and it doesn't look like they are going to open back up again any time soon.

So where are you meant to take your bags of old clothes and rags in Edinburgh during the pandemic? Luckily we have found some options.

Against Breast Cancer - anytime collection

(Against Breast Cancer)

If you have had a large clearout, Charity Against Breast Cancer will take collections starting at 10kg.

The website states: "Both free and simple to use, Anytime Clothing Collections put you in control by allowing you to choose when you receive your collection bags, and when you want to have them collected.

"We’ll then turn your old clothes into funds supporting our breast cancer research. All at a time to suit you!

"Ideal for your home, you can also request them for your place of study or work, and its not just clothes, we also accept shoes, clothes, belts and hats!

The minimum weight we can collect per bag is 10kg and for every tonne of collected, Against Breast Cancer will receive £90 (including VAT), vital funds for our pioneering research."

Leith Theatre - Fabric Donations

(Leith Theatre)

The popular Edinburgh theatre is taking donations of fabric as long as it is dropped off in the bin.

Leith Theatre plans to turn the old rags donated into fabric which can be used to create coronavirus masks.

The website states: "An estimated £140 million worth of used clothing goes to waste every year - that's around 350,000 tonnes.

"Binned clothes fill up landfill sites, raise greenhouse gas emissions, and harm the environment.

"Put your unwanted clothes to better use. We run around 8,000 clothing banks, located all over the UK.

"Everything you donate is re-sold, reused or recycled, helping us lessen our impact on the environment, while raising money to support our projects throughout the UK."
