Where Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs finish if postponed games have same result as reverse fixtures

When will the Premier League season return?

That's the big question on every football fan's lips right now.

The coronavirus pandemic has left us without football for the past two-and-a-half weeks, and the suspension is set to go on until at least the beginning of May, with a strong belief that it will go on even longer.

Most of the Premier League teams have nine games left to play, with four having ten to play as a result of the Carabao Cup final taking place at the end of February.

There have been a number of different suggestions about how the season will end, with some saying the entire campaign will be declared null and void. But according to football.london sources the season could resume in July behind closed doors.

What Arsenal stars are up to during lockdown

That is another three months away and as time goes on the calls for the season to be scrapped completely grow.

One report said that the season could be called off after just two more games - those two games to get everyone onto 29 matches played.

But what if the postponed games had the same result as the matches between the two teams from earlier in the season?

Every team has played every other team once, so the final 92 matches could be simulated, as it were, with the same scoreline as the match between the two teams earlier in the campaign.

That would have no impact on the fate of the Premier League title, with Liverpool having only dropped points against Manchester United and Watford - teams they have already played twice.

It would have an effect on the relegation battle, though, while Arsenal would be particularly badly hit given their results already against teams they still have to play a second time.

Chelsea would finish fourth, the position they are in now, holding off Manchester United in the battle for a Champions League place, with 16 points from their final nine games with wins against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Watford , Norwich and Wolves.

They would lose to Manchester City, West Ham and Liverpool, with a draw against Sheffield United.

Tottenham would finish eighth, picking up 12 points from three wins over West Ham, Bournemouth and Crystal palace and three draws against Sheffield United, Everton and Arsenal.

Speaking of the Gunners, who are currently ninth in the table, they would drop a staggering three places to finish 12th as a result of only picking up eight points against the ten teams they have to play.

They lost to Liverpool, Manchester City, Brighton and Leicester earlier in the season, drawing with Watford, Wolves, Southampton, Norwich and Tottenham, with a solitary win over Aston Villa.

Down at the bottom West Ham would escape relegation by picking up 13 points from their remaining nine games, with Norwich, Watford and Aston Villa going down.
