'Where are they now?' - Arsenal legend takes aim at those who criticised Mikel Arteta and Edu

Arsenal icon Kevin Campbell has taken aim at those in the media who wrote the Gunners off following their poor start to the season, defending the work done by Mikel Arteta and Edu in the process.

Campbell made over 200 appearances for Arsenal between 1988 and 1995, winning a first division division title, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup in north London.

Arteta came under immense pressure heading into September's international break as Arsenal lost their first three Premier League games without scoring a goal.

But a 3-1 victory against Tottenham on Sunday marked an impressive turnaround in form and Campbell was keen to shine a spotlight on the role the manager and director Edu have played.

“All the people that were firing the shots at Edu and Arteta at the media, where are they now?" Campbell said in an interview with Football Insider.

"They wrote us off. It was all, ‘They’ve spent the most money and look who they’ve signed.’ Where are they now?

“You cannot attack these guys and then not praise them when they succeed. Give them the same energy, at least a little praise. But, you never see them.

“It goes to show that Edu and Arteta know what they are doing. There had to be a change of approach at the club. They went for younger players who are going to feel the club and it is paying dividends.

“These players want to play for the club and they have a go. That is all you can ask for. Those players on the pitch got the 12th man involved on Sunday and the atmosphere was electric. That is a sign of things moving in the right direction.”

The Gunners are looking to win their fourth league game on the bounce on Saturday evening when they make the journey south to face high-flying Brighton at the Amex.
