Where are they now: 9 former New York Jets head coaches?

The dysfunctional New York Jets franchise took another bizarre — but predictable — turn on Wednesday when GM Mike Maccagnan was fired and coach Adam Gase was given the title on an interim basis. Makes one wonder where are some of  the Jets’ coaches now?

Pete Carroll went 6-10 in his lone season as the Jets’ head coach. To say the least, he’s had a great deal of success at USC and with the Seattle Seahawks.

Things went from bad to horrendous after Carroll. The Jets brought on Rich Kotite in a local-boy-makes-good story. Disaster ensued. In two seasons, he went 4-28, including 1-15 in 1996. He wound up spending time on TV, such as NFL Network.

Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick had two short — miniscule — runs as Jets head coach. First, he assumed the position for six days before Bill Parcells took over in 1997. Then, he was coach for one day in 2000 before bailing. So, that’s seven days and no games as head coach of the Jets. He’s gone on to better things in New England.

Bill Parcells

Bill Parcells found his way to the Jets’ sideline from 1997-99. He had a great run, too, going 29-19. Parcells is the only coach in franchise history to have held the position for multiple seasons and exited with a record above .500. He’s currently retired and enjoying time as owner of some racehorses.

Al Groh

Al Groh was another one-and-done coach with the Jets. He had a single-season mark of 9-7 before deciding it was more attractive to coach at the University of Virginia, As Cavalier coach in 2008, Groh had to fire his son Mike, who was the offensive coordinator. While Al Groh is out of football, Mike is still in it, currently the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Herman Edwards

Herman Edwards has seen quite the cycle in the coaching life. He went from coaching the Jets to coaching the Kansas City Chiefs. He then spent 10 years as an analyst for ESPN before returning to the sidelines. Edwards is currently the head coach at Arizona State,

Eric Mangini

Eric Mangini came close to .500. He was 23-25 in three seasons with the  Jets. He then went on to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns and worked on the San Francisco 49ers’ staff for one season. He’s moved on to television as so many former coaches and players do.

Rex Ryan

The colorful, controversial and verbose Rex Ryan enjoyed a wild ride as coach of the Jets. He saw the team lose in the AFC Championship Game in his first two seasons. After that it was mediocrity at best with two 8-8 seasons and two sub-.500 years. Ryan went on to coach the Buffalo Bills and currently is in television.

Todd Bowles

Todd Bowles is the most recent Jets coach to be shown the exit. He lasted four seasons and went 24-40. Ten of those wins came in 2015, his first season with the club. Bowles has joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as defensive coordinator. In Tampa Bay, he is reuniting with Bruce Arians, for whom he held the same position in Arizona.

Adam Gase

That brings us to Adam Gase and an era that appears to controversial before a single practice in the summer. Gase did not have success in Miami, an AFC East rival, and now somehow is coach and GM of the Jets. Go figure.
