Where are the best places to watch The Blaydon Race? Here are spectator tips for the annual race

Thousands of runners soon will be “gannin’ alang the Scotswood Road” once again on June 9 as a race favourite prepares for its annual outing in Newcastle.

The Blaydon Race is, of course, steeped in local tradition and takes place on the same date every year. It starts on Collingwood Street in Newcastle, then heads west along Scotswood Road and finishes in Blaydon - but at a slightly different spot this year, making the route just a smidge shorter.

While the runners will be pounding the streets, there will be hundreds of spectators lining the streets cheering and supporting the competitors - if it's decent enough weather anyway -  but where is the best place to watch the race?

Here we offer up suggestions.

What is the route of the Blaydon Race?

The race takes runners along the banks of the Tyne, hopefully in glorious sunshine. Starting at Balmbra’s in Newcastle city centre, participants then head along Collingwood Street and Scotswood Road past Armstrong’s factory and over the Scotswood Bridge -  finishing this year in the car park of Morrsons in Blaydon, instead of the playing fields on Shibdon Road. There will be music and dance at the start, along the course and at the finish.

Where is the best place to watch the race?

Most spectators line the streets of Newcastle, particularly around Central Station and along Scotswood Road, while others wait patiently on Scotswood bridge to cheer on the competitors, whether the professional runners or family and friends.

However, the race can be viewed along most of the route, although those wanting a particularly good view might be best advised to get there early to avoid being disappointed.
