Where are Harry Potter's Scottish stars now? Hollywood, TV stardom and prison

JK Rowling and Robbie Coltrane aren't the only Scottish names to have played major roles in the Harry potter franchise.

The wizarding world, which arguably was created largely in Edinburgh, has featured a lot of Scottish landscapes and locations over the years.

And joining Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, there are a number of north of the border names who are much loved for starring in the smash-hit series of films.

However, not everyone had made it to Hollywood as a result, so here's the lowdown on what they are up to.

From Robbie Coltrane to David Tennant and Peter Mullan, this is everything you need to know about the Harry Potter castmembers from Scotland.

Robbie Coltrane

Obviously Robbie Coltrane’s Rubeus Hagrid had become one of the most well loved castmembers.

Rutherglen-born Robbie had already made it big in Cracker and starred in Pierce Brosnan Bond films ‘The World is not Enough’ and ‘GoldenEye’ , winning countless awards along the way.

His children Alice and Spencer loved the series and he appeared in all eight of the films, and returned to the reunion special in January.

David Tennant

David Tennant’s played Bartemius Crouch Jr in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ahead of replacing Christopher Eccleston as the time-travelling Doctor Who shortly after.

David has subsequently played Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, Kilgrave in Jessica Jones and was recently seen filming as Crowley in Good Omens.

He also got an Emmy for playing serial killer Dennis Nielsen in ITV’s Des in 2020 .

He is due to play Alexander Litvinenko in a forthcoming drama about the Russian intelligence officer’s poisoning.

Kevin Guthrie

Kevin starred as Abernathy in Harry Potter breakout Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them . He was convicted of sexual assault which led to him being dropped from the follow up ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore,’ ahead of production.

Kevin had appeared in Sunshine on Leith, Sunset Song and Dunkirk, but received a sentence of three years in prison.

Following the incident in October 2017 he was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.

There was an appeal against the conviction but it was rejected in November 2021.

Kevin has subsequently lodged a second bid against the decision.

Peter Mullan

Peter Mullan was also in Harry Potter (PA)

Peter joined the Harry potter franchise for the last two films as evil death eater Yaxley for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts one and two.

The Braveheart and Trainspotting actor has become huge with roles in Netflix thriller Ozark and the HBO series Westworld and has more big productions ahead.

Now 58, Peter will play an as yet untitled part in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which will come out this year.

Shirley Henderson

Shirley Henderson’s odd but memorable ‘Moaning Myrtle’ is one fans love and the actress who played Gail in Trainspotting, helped Harry out in the second and fourth films.

Shirley resurrected her role of Gail in T2 and was the picked upon wife Bunty in Irvine Welsh's Filth as she starred alongside James McAvoy.

Her new movie See How They Run sees her act with Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell and David Oyelowo.

The movie is in post-production and we are promised it will come out this year.

Kelly Macdonald

Trainspotting and Harry Potter star Kelly Macdonald (PA)

Kelly played Helena Ravenclaw in 2011's ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2'.

The recognisable face has also voiced Merida in Disney's Brave alongside Billy Connolly.

Kelly, who starred in the original Trainspotting, also revived Diane Coulston for T2.

Most recently she played DCI Joanne Davidson in the sixth series of Line of Duty.

Only H knows what she is doing next.

Katie Leung

Harry Potter star Katie Leung as Cho Chang (Murray Close)

Katie, who had appeared in T2, got the part of Cho Chang in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire after managing to beat thousands at an audition.

Dundee-born Katie's on-screen kiss with Daniel Radcliffe made her the subject of global headlines in 2005, and she returned for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, two years after.

Katie 34, has talked about her experiences with racism since then and being asked to deny online racist abuse, claiming a publicist advised her to “say it’s not happening”.

She recently provided the voice for Annika in Netflix cartoon ‘Arcane’ and will play Ash inAmazon Prime's ‘The Peripheral’.
