The plan to host Euro 2020 in various countries always had a mixed reception from fans. That this took placed in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic, however, served to complicate the format even more.
Much prior to Covid-19, a decision was taken by Uefa to host the tournament across multiple European countries as part of the 60th anniversary of the European Championships. This was the first time that the tournament has been played across so many different countries.
That it was described as Euro 2020, although played in 2021, also seemed to confuse matters.
Thankfully, the dates and location of the next Euros are simpler to understand.
These will be hosted by Germany and will take place in the summer of 2024, in just three years' time.
Germany last hosted a major international tournament in 2006 when the Italians won that World Cup on penalties.
Wales will be looking to qualify for the third European Championships in a row whilst England would love to finally get their hands on this trophy on German soil.
Before then, there is the matter of the 2022 World Cup hosted in Qatar in which Wales have a reasonable chance to qualify for and England will be looking to win.
