When you need to renew your UK passport and when they go blue

Now the UK has officially left the European Union, you may be wondering when you need to renew your passport.

The current maroon covers are due to turn blue as part of a bid to symbolise the country's national identity, the immigration minister Brandon Lewis has confirmed.

The blue passports were the original passport colours first used in 1921, Gloucestershire Live reports.

All passports issued from mid-2020 onwards will definitely be blue, the Home Office has confirmed.

If you renew your passport before then in the next few months, you could receive it in either colour.

During the 11-month-long "transition period", travel will remain the same at least until December 2020.

Starting from January 1 2021, you may need to renew your British passport earlier.

On the day of travel, your passport must have at least six months left and be less than 10 years old, even if it has six months or more left.
