When you can see a Full Wolf Moon and lunar eclipse this week

You'll have a chance to catch a 'full wolf moon' this weekend alongside a penumbral lunar eclipse.

The full moon, which takes place when the moon and sun are on opposite sides of the earth, is due on the evening of Friday January 10. The reason this month's is known as a 'full wolf moon' is it takes place in the time of year when wolves were said to howl outside Native American camps in the USA.

The first full moon of the New Year is also known as the old moon or the moon after Yule.

At the same time, a penumbral lunar eclipse will occur. They happen when the moon passes through our planet's partial shadow.

The combination means the moon will be full in the sky, but darker than usual.

EarthSky explained: “This is the first of 2020’s six eclipses (two solar and four lunar). All four lunar eclipses in 2020 are hard-to-see penumbral eclipses.

“During all of these eclipses, the moon will miss Earth’s dark umbral shadow and travel instead through Earth’s outer faint penumbra.”

If you miss it, do not worry: February's full moon should be more impressive, as the full moon should coincide with a 'super moon', meaning the moon will look larger than usual in the sky. That's due on February 9.
