When work could begin on Leeds inland port - and what it could cost

The proposed construction of an ‘inland port’ in east Leeds could be completed as early as spring next year.

Latest plans for the scheme, expected to cost more than £3m, suggest the facility in Stourton would move up to 200 tonnes of road freight to water in the first year of operation.

A document, set to go before regional decision-makers next week, suggests construction could start in September 2020, and be completed by March 2021.

It added: “The project could provide a viable alternative to road transport for construction materials needed to bring forward flagship developments such as Leeds Southbank and High Speed 2.

“Commercially, the promoter has demonstrated the scheme can be viable, although further work is required on risk and formal written legal advice relating to state aid is required.”

The document suggested the wharf, which would sit on land off Haigh Park Road, Stourton, could create 16 new jobs, and benefit the environment.

It calls on members of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) to approve £3.17m of funding for the scheme.
