London finally had some reprieve from a fortnight of temperatures above 28C, but another heatwave could be on its way.
Though temperatures dropped to around 24C over the weekend, the mercury is set to rise again this week, according to BBC Weather.
As of 12pm on Tuesday, temperatures will climb to 26C on Wednesday and 25C on Thursday. Friday will be the hottest day as temperatures are expected to edge a sweltering 29C.
The weekend will look to be mildly cooler with temperatures forecast to reach highs of 25C. However, next week is going to get much hotter.
Temperatures on Wednesday will exceed 28C, while Thursday is set to reach 29C. Friday and Saturday will also see highs of 28C, though BBC Weather is predicting some showers on Friday and some drizzle throughout Sunday morning.
In London, the temperature must reach 28C for three or more consecutive days to meet the local threshold for a heatwave.
That means a fourth heatwave of the year can be expected in a little more than a week’s time.
The same BBC forecast predicts no rain in London until Friday, July 31. With the last proper drops of rain falling on June 27, that means London could go without any rain for 32 days.
That would be longest dry spell in London since 2018, according to records.
The south-east of England has seen the longest unbroken spell of no recorded rainfall in 30 years, according to the Met Office.
The dry weather has caused drought conditions across much of the country, with millions being hit with hosepipe bans.
London Fire Brigade has also warned of wildfire risks as much of the capital’s green spaces turn into tinder boxes amid the warm weather.
Train services have also been plagued by the unprecedented heat, with cancellations widespread across the transport network.
London has already seen three heatwaves this year with record-breaking temperatures in May and June, with a further two-week long hot spell in July.
