When will the speed cameras on Coast Road go? Silverlink roadwork bosses reveal all

Drivers will have to put up with a 30mph speed restriction on a busy road for around two more months.

The lower speed limit was introduced on the A1058 Coast Road and A19 at the Silverlink junction in 2016 after work started to create the region's first triple-decker roundabout.

A new underpass, allowing drivers to travel on the A19 without stopping at the junction, was completed at the end of March and the road was opened to traffic

The 30mph limit, controlled by average speed cameras, was then lifted from the A19.

However, the cameras remained on the Coast Road as Highways England carried out the last remaining parts of the project.

Now it has been confirmed that the 30mph restriction will stay until early July.

Highways England are currently carrying out final road resurfacing and kerbing work, which is due to complete at the end of May.

But, at the same time, North Tyneside Council is upgrading a major cycle route in the area and this scheme is not expected to finish until early July.

The 30mph restriction is to remain on the Coast Road until the council's work is done. After that, the limit will go back to 50mph.

These details were revealed as the team behind the Silverlink project held an event to celebrate the junction's opening.

David Haimes, regional investment programme director at Highways England, congratulated everyone involved in completing the scheme "on time and on budget", and talked about its importance in helping to boost the economy as well as increasing safety along the route.

Mayor Norma Redfearn described the triple-decker roundabout as an "amazing engineering feat" and praised the team for keeping the traffic flowing while the work was taking place.

She added: "The compliments I've had about the work here have been truly amazing.

"The A19 is extremely important to the regional economy and this improvement will have a number of major benefits for residents and business in both North Tyneside and thew wider area, by reducing congestion and therefore supporting our efforts to improve air quality, improving road safety and helping to ensure we have a road network to attract investment and job growth to our borough."

The new junction is expected to be used by 80,000 vehicles a day.
