When will Taoiseach Micheal Martin and the Government announce if Ireland is introducing more measures?

The country is still reeling after the National Public Health Emergency Team issued a shock recommendation for strict lockdown last night.

Health chiefs met on Sunday to discuss the continued rise in coronavirus cases across the island.

And the public and politicians were left shocked when it emerged that the team of experts was recommending the entire country should be moved to Level 5 lockdown.

There had been some discussion that added restrictions may be placed on counties which have seen concerning trends in coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

However, such a major move is set to be rejected by Government.

Level 5 restrictions would see people mostly confined to their homes again with gatherings of any kind no longer permitted.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes would all be forced to shut their doors only permitted to serve takeaway and delivery.

There would also be strict rules around funeral attendances and sporting events, among many others.

But instead, the Government is understood to be planning to place the entire country under Level 3 measures, while a move to Level 4 hasn't been fully ruled out.

There has been no comment from any Government officials yet .

Here’s what we know so far and when we should find out:

  • Dr Tony Holohan met with Government leaders this morning to tell them why NPHET wants a move to level five.
  • The Cabinet was previously scheduled to meet on Tuesday morning with the public likely to find out a decision after that. However, given the enormity of the decision it has been reported the Cabinet will instead meet today.
  • The public are likely to find out what is happening either tonight or on Tuesday morning/afternoon.
