When will Storm Barra end? Met Office on when windy weather spell will be over across UK

Storm Barra is set to continue through Tuesday but wind speeds will be "below alert levels" in the North East from Wednesday morning.

The Met Office has issued two weather warnings covering the North East of England. One warns of snow in western parts of Northumberland and County Durham, another says the entire region will experience gale-force winds.

Both of the weather warnings expire at 11.59pm on Tuesday, by when the worst of the storm - including wind gusts of up to 60mph in coastal areas - will be over.

The Met Office told ChronicleLive that Storm Barra will "slowly ease by the end of" Wednesday in the South West, but wind speeds in the North East, the rest of England, most of Wales, and all of Scotland will be "below warning levels" from midnight on Tuesday.

There are no weather warnings in place for the North East on Wednesday, although a wind warning will remain in the South West of England and South Wales until 6pm that day.

But the North East can still expect rain and "blustery" wind, Met Office presenter Aiden McGivern predicted in his Tuesday forecast.

He said: "At the start of Wednesday it looks like it's going to remain very unsettled indeed, across parts of the UK.

"As a result, it's a frost-free start to Wednesday, but an unsettled start."

It will be "blustery" in the North East Wednesday, Aiden said, but the most powerful wind will be in the South West.

He added: "All in all, it's a cold and unpleasant day, with that gusty wind and a lot of showers moving through.

"The weather quietens down somewhat on Thursday and Friday, and turns a little milder this weekend."
