When will sport return in Ireland? Dates for GAA, soccer, horse racing, rugby, golf, tennis and more

It's now well over a month since any sporting action has taken place in Ireland.

Horse racing was the last sport to go after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar shut down games - including those behind closed doors - across the country on March 24.

Racing had successfully staged a number of meetings without spectators and is one sport that could return sooner rather than later.

Golf and tennis are among the sports people will be able to play first, while GAA and soccer will have to wait a bit longer to return. Rugby and boxing will be among the last sports to come back.

Last Friday, the Government published a roadmap to ease COVID-19 restrictions and reopen Ireland’s economy and society.

Here's when each sport could return according to the roadmap, but all of these dates hinge on HSE approval and could change:

Athletics

Public sport amenities, including pitches, where social distancing can be maintained can open from May 18.

People can take part in outdoor sporting and fitness activities, involving team sports training in small groups (but not matches) where social distancing can be maintained and where there is no contact from June 8.

Boxing

August 10 is the projected date for boxing to return here, but Irish boxers could be back in action before then in other countries.

Eddie Hearn stated last week that he hopes Katie Taylor's fight with Amanda Serrano will take place in late July/ early August.

GAA

Training in small groups, but not matches from June 8.

Matches with limitations placed on the numbers of spectators from July 20.

Golf

Golf courses are to open on a restricted basis from May 18.

Horse racing

Racing may be one of the first sports to return here.

The government's roadmap stated that behind-closed-doors sporting activities and events would take place during stage three, projected for June 29.

But racing falls under the department of agriculture's remit here, as it does in France, which means there is a chance it could return without spectators on May 18.

Horse Racing Ireland are seeking clarification from the Taoiseach on when the sport can return.

Rugby

This will be one of the last sports to come back, with August 10 the projected date for close physical contact games returning.

Soccer

Training in small groups, but not matches from June 8.

Matches with limitations placed on the numbers of spectators from July 20.

Swimming

Swimming pools are set to open in Phase 4 on July 20.

Tennis

Tennis courts where social distancing can be maintained are to be opened on May 18.
