When will schools reopen? How it will work as lockdown begins to lift

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will unveil his roadmap for easing Covid restrictions this afternoon.

England is currently under its third national lockdown, and there is a "stay at home" order in place. People can only go out for a limited list of purposes, including work (where it cannot be done from home), essential shopping and exercise.

Schools have been closed to all but the children of key workers and vulnerable children since Tuesday 5 January.

Boris Johnson has said the reopening of schools is his top priority as the country prepares for lockdown to be gradually lifted in the coming months.

Here's what we know so far:

When will schools reopen?

Schools in England will reopen on 8 March.

While teachers' unions have called for a staggered return, government minister Nadhim Zahawi has suggested all year groups will go back at once.

After school sport, clubs and other activities will also be allowed to resume from 8 March, which is two weeks today.

Nurseries have remained open throughout this latest lockdown.

8 March will also see the rules around socialising relaxed, as people in England will be able to meet with one other person from one other household for outdoor recreation.

This means two people will be able to meet in a public outdoor place, such as a park or a beach, to relax.

At the moment, people can only meet one other person outdoors to exercise.

The 8 March will also see new rules introduced for care homes, as each resident will be allowed to have one regular indoor visitor.

Visitors will be required to have a test before each visit, and they will have to wear PPE while they're on site.

While social distancing should be maintained where possible, holding hands will be allowed.
