When will pubs and restaurants reopen after lockdown?

Boris Johnson has finally revealed the roadmap out of lockdown for England, including when pubs and restaurants will be allowed to open.

The country was placed into its third national lockdown in January, forcing the closure of all pubs, restaurants, theatres, non-essential retail, gyms and hairdressers.

Schools have also been closed to all but children of key workers.

The roadmap out of lockdown was signed off in a Cabinet meeting on Monday morning after Boris Johnson and his ministers spent the past week hearing scientific evidence on the latest with the virus.

Addressing the Commons today, and ahead of a press conference this evening, the PM set out the dates for the economy to begin reopening again.

The four-stage plan will be driven by data, rather than dates, with at least five weeks between each of the steps.

The steps will begin on March 8 with the reopening of schools.

Beer gardens and outdoor restaurant spaces are then expected to reopen as part of step two, from April 12 at the earliest.

People will only be able to meet in groups of six, or two households, in these settings.

Step two will also see non-essential shops, hairdressers and nail salons, libraries and museums, and zoos and theme parks reopening.

Both the substantial meal rule and the controversial curfew will be scrapped.

Indoor pubs and restaurants will not be allowed to reopen until step three, May 17 at the earliest.

The rule of six, or two households, will also apply in these settings, but will be removed if you're in the beer garden from this date.

From June 21, the social contact rules will be reviewed and relaxed completely if it's safe to do so.

All dates will rely on four tests - that the vaccine programme remains on track, that the number of people dying or needing hospital treatment reduces, that infection rates do not risk a surge in hospital admissions and that new variants don't pose any new risks that would prevent restrictions lifting.

In Greater Manchester, pubs and restaurants have been closed since the second national lockdown in November.

The region was briefly in Tier 3 last winter - allowing non-essential retail to open - before being plunged back into a full lockdown shortly after Christmas.

Hospitality businesses have been able to operate only for takeaway and delivery services.
