When will my EU Digital Covid Certificate expire? New updates for Ireland as travel rules relax

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that new Covid Certificates will be sent out to those who have had the booster vaccine.

The move comes as Ireland begins to ease restrictions around travel for those who have been given doses of the available vaccines.

Cabinet agreed on Wednesday to scrap a rule brought in alongside the discovery of the Omicron variant that required all passengers to show proof of a negative Covid test.

Now, all fully vaccinated passengers entering Ireland will no longer be required to prove they are not infected with the virus.

The new rule came into effect at midnight, but will still see unvaccinated travellers still required to show a negative PCR taken 72 hours before arrival.

Mr Donnelly confirmed that the new Covid Certs would be sent out automatically by the end of this week, and to others as soon as they receive their booster dose.

Each cert will have a validity period that passengers will have to stick to meaning they will be:

  • valid for nine months with the vaccine
  • valid for six months for those with proof of recovery

The new EU Regulations for the nine-month expiry of certs will take effect from February 1, 2022.

Confirming the changes, Minister Donnelly wrote on Twitter: "Digital Covid Certs will be updated soon to reflect your additional vaccine.

"The EU is applying a maximum 9 mth validity to certs based on a completed primary vaccination course."

"You can also request a DCC of Recovery if you've recovered in the last 6 months via an online portal."
