When will lockdown end? Everything we know about 'indefinite restrictions'

The raft of new restrictions set to be introduced by Government have been described as 'indefinite', with no current indications on how long they'll last.

Cabinet is meeting on Tuesday morning to decide the fate of the country for the coming weeks, with most parts of society set to shut down in what will be Ireland's third lockdown.

Non-essential retail and gyms will be allowed to remain open for Christmas, while restaurants, pubs, cinemas and galleries will all shut their doors.

A travel ban with the UK will be extended until New Year's Eve, while sources indicate that people will not be allowed to leave their county from St Stephen's Day.

But many business owners are extremely worried, with the Government not yet giving any indications as to how long the measures will last - despite us mostly knowing what will open and close.

Previously, Ireland has seen lockdown announcements mostly at three week intervals. This means that the Government would announce a renewal or easing of measures every 21 days.

But more recently, the country spent six weeks in a tough lockdown, which broke precedent from the closures of March, April and May.

It is thought that Government will introduced the measures for at least three weeks, but really there doesn't seem to be any end in sight as of yet.

There is also the possibility of moving to a full Level Five in January, although this hasn't been confirmed.
